Who we are

About Hearth & Patina

Hearth & Patina exists because buying cast iron is made more complicated than it needs to be, and most of the content meant to help you is written by people who benefit from you spending more than you should.

The problem we're trying to fix

Search for a cast-iron skillet or a dutch oven and you get the same page over and over: ten products, a paragraph of hype each, prices that were typed in by hand some time last year, and a "we tested these for 40 hours" claim nobody can verify. Readers know it, which is why so many of them add "reddit" to the search — they are actively routing around affiliate content to find someone who will just tell them the truth.

Our whole strategy is to be the page they were hoping to find.

Who writes this

Hearth & Patina is written and edited by Stephen V., a long-time cast-iron enthusiast who has spent years cooking on, seasoning, and restoring this gear at home — searing steaks, baking sourdough in a preheated pot, bringing a rusty flea-market pan back to life. That is genuine, first-hand experience, and it is the only kind we claim.

What we are not: we are not a test lab, we do not employ food scientists, and we do not have a warehouse of pans under controlled measurement. When you read "heat retention" on this site, it is a judgement built from published specifications, materials science, and aggregated owner reports — not a number we measured. We say so, in those words, on our methodology page, because pretending otherwise would be a lie, and the honesty is the entire point.

What that means in practice

  • Live prices.Every number on this site comes from Amazon's API and is stamped with the date we fetched it. If our data goes stale, the number disappears rather than misleading you.
  • A published rubric. Every score breaks into named metrics, and /methodology explains exactly what each one means and where the numbers came from.
  • Buyer-first picks. We rank on what is right for the reader, which is why you will find a $25 Lodge ranked above a $200 boutique pan, and a $90 dutch oven beating a $450 one, all over this site — even though the expensive ones pay us more.
  • No fabricated reviews. We have no customer testimonials because we are a new publisher, so we show none. We would rather have a clean page than an invented one.

How we're funded

Hearth & Patina is a member of the Amazon Associates programme and earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a ranking. The full details are on our affiliate disclosure, and our editorial independence is spelled out in our editorial policy.
