Why Does My Induction Cooktop Buzz?

A hum or buzz from an induction cooktop is almost always normal, and almost always coming from the cookware rather than the appliance. Manufacturers say so plainly — and the fix, more often than not, is a heavier pan.

The buzz is almost certainly your pan, and it is almost certainly normal. GE states plainly that a humming sound while cooking on an induction surface is normal, and KitchenAid attributes it to the amount of energy being transmitted to the cookware at high power. The most effective single fix is a heavier, single-piece pan — which is to say, cast iron. The second is turning the power down.

What is actually vibrating

An induction element generates an alternating magnetic field, typically around 25 to 50 kHz, and heats the pan by inducing eddy currents in its base. That field is not static, and neither is the pan sitting in it.

Wikipedia's induction cooking article names the mechanism precisely: electromagnetically induced acoustic noise and vibration — a high-pitched hum or buzz — may be produced, especially at high power, if the cookware has loose parts or if the layers of the pot are not well bonded.

That sentence contains the whole answer. Buzzing is a cookware construction phenomenon. A multi-ply pan is a sandwich of steel and aluminum layers; when the field varies at tens of kilohertz, those layers can vibrate against one another. A cast iron pan is one solid piece of metal with nothing to vibrate against.

Why cast iron is the quiet pan

GE is unusually specific about this in its own support documentation: heavier pans such as enameled cast iron produce less noise than a lighter weight multi-ply stainless steel pan.

Two reasons, both structural. A cast iron pan is a single casting — no bonded layers, no disc brazed to a base, no rivets, nothing to buzz against. And its sheer mass damps whatever vibration does occur; a heavy object is simply harder to make resonate audibly than a light one.

The four things that reduce it

1. Turn the power down

The single most reliable fix. KitchenAid states the sound will quiet or go away when the power is turned down. Noise scales with transmitted energy, so a pan buzzing at level 9 will usually be silent at level 6. Since induction boils absurdly fast anyway, most cooking does not need the top settings.

2. Use a pan that covers the element

GE notes that pans that completely cover the element ring will produce less noise. A small pan on a big element concentrates the field at the edges of the base, which is both noisier and less efficient. Match the pan to the ring.

3. Check the lid and the contents

A loose lid resting on a rim is a classic buzz source, and the vibration you blame on the cooktop is a piece of metal chattering against another piece of metal. Lift the lid while it hums — if the noise stops, you have found it. An empty or nearly empty pan is also louder than a full one.

4. Move one of the two pans

GE describes a second, less obvious cause: with adjacent elements running at certain power levels, pan noise may interact and produce a low whistle or intermittent hum. Change the power level on one of them, or move a pan to a non-adjacent element, and the interference goes away.

Other noises that are also normal

  • A fan. Induction cooktops contain cooling fans for their electronics, and the fan can run on after you switch off. Not a fault.
  • A clicking or ticking at low power. Lower settings are often delivered by cycling power on and off rather than by continuous modulation. Ticking as it cycles is normal.
  • A low hum with nothing cooking. KitchenAid attributes an idle hum on its cooktops to the Cooktop Lock feature.

When it is worth investigating

Normal induction noise is proportional: it rises with power, it changes when you swap pans, and it stops when you switch off. Worth a call to the manufacturer if the noise is loud and irregular, if it appears suddenly on a cooktop that was previously quiet with the same pans, if it is accompanied by error codes or elements cutting out, or if it continues long after everything is switched off and the fan has stopped.

Otherwise: it is physics doing its job, and putting a cast iron pan on the ring is the most effective thing you can do about it.

Buying quieter cookware for induction

Solid beats bonded

A one-piece casting has nothing to vibrate against. Cast iron, bare or enameled, is the quietest common cookware on induction, and GE says so in its own documentation.

Heavy beats light

Mass damps vibration. This is the rare case where cast iron's weight — usually the argument against it — is a straightforward advantage.

Match the base to the ring

A pan that covers the element is quieter, more efficient and heats more evenly. If you are buying a pot for induction, check the flat base measurement, not the rim — see dutch ovens on induction.

Check the lid fit

A rattling lid is a common misattributed buzz. Well-fitted heavy lids, like those on cast iron dutch ovens, do not chatter. Loose glass lids on light pans do.

Do not buy a new cooktop over this

Noise that scales with power and changes with the pan is normal on any induction cooktop, at any price. Change the pan before you change the appliance.
