Dutch Ovens on Induction: What Actually Matters
Every cast iron dutch oven, enameled or bare, is induction compatible — the enamel is only a surface coating over an iron body. The real questions are whether the base matches your element, how the pot behaves under induction's speed, and one type of pot you should not put on the glass at all.

Yes. Every cast iron dutch oven works on induction, enameled or bare, because induction couples to the iron body and enamel is only a glass coating over that body, not a barrier. The things that actually decide whether it works wellare the base diameter against your element size, the pot's weight on a glass surface, and — the one genuine exclusion — camp dutch ovens with legs, which do not sit flat and should never go on a glass cooktop.

Why enamel does not block induction
Induction works by driving eddy currents in the base of the pan with an alternating magnetic field, typically in the 25 to 50 kHz range. That requires the pan body to be ferromagnetic — iron is, aluminum and copper are not.
Enameled cast iron is cast iron with glass fused to it. The magnetic field passes straight through a thin non-conductive coating and does its work in the iron underneath. So a Le Creuset, a Staub, a Lodge enameled pot and a bare Lodge camp oven are all equally “induction compatible” in the sense the marketing means it.
The simple test for any pot: a fridge magnet sticks firmly to the base. If it does, induction will heat it.
The thing that actually matters: base diameter
This is where dutch ovens differ from skillets, and where most of the real complaints come from.
A dutch oven has curved or sloped sides, so its base is substantially narrower than its widest point. A 6-quart pot might measure eleven inches across the rim and eight or nine across the flat bottom. Only that flat bottom couples to the element.
Two consequences:
- A base much smaller than the element wastes power and heats unevenly, and some cooktops will not even detect a pot whose base falls below their minimum diameter. Small pots — 2 to 3 quarts — are the ones most likely to trip this on a large element.
- A base much larger than the element gives you a hot ring and cool edges. Lodge's own guidance for enameled cookware is to preheat on the burner closest to the size of your cookware, which is exactly this problem stated by the manufacturer.
Practical rule: match the pot's flat base to the element within an inch or so, and use your larger element for a 6-quart pot. If you routinely braise in a big pot on a small element, do the browning stage in batches and accept that the pot has a hot center.
Induction is fast, and enamel does not like fast
Induction delivers power directly into the pan, so a heavy pot heats far quicker than on gas or a radiant coil. That is normally an advantage. With enameled cookware it is a hazard, for one reason.
Lodge is explicit: do not heat empty enamel cookware on the stovetop, and preheat gradually with oil in the pan. On induction it is unusually easy to break that rule by accident, because an empty enameled pot on a high setting reaches damaging temperatures in well under a minute. Enamel is glass, and thermal stress is what cracks and crazes it.

Weight, and the glass underneath it
A full 6-quart enameled dutch oven is one of the heaviest things in a domestic kitchen. Induction cooktops are glass-ceramic, and while the glass is strong under steady load, it is vulnerable to impact and to dragging.
- Lift, never slide. A dragged pot with a grain of grit under it scratches the surface permanently. This applies to bare iron most of all, because unglazed bases are rough.
- Set it down, do not drop it. Two hands, both handles, every time. A pot dropped an inch onto glass can crack it.
- Check the base for grit before it goes down, particularly with a bare pot that has been in an oven with crumbs.
Enameled pots are gentler on glass than bare iron because their bases are smoother, and many have an unglazed but ground base ring. That is a genuine point in enamel's favor for an induction kitchen — more so than any difference in heating.
The one pot that does not belong on induction
A camp dutch oven— the outdoor kind with three legs and a flat, rimmed lid designed to hold coals — should not go on an induction or glass cooktop. The legs mean the base does not sit flat, so it will heat badly or not be detected at all, and three points of hard cast iron on glass is an obvious way to crack a cooktop.

What about the buzzing?
Some pots hum on induction. Heavy single-piece cast iron is generally the quietest cookware there is — GE states plainly that heavier pans such as enameled cast iron produce less noise than a lighter weight multi-ply stainless steel pan. If your dutch oven buzzes noticeably, it is usually the lid rattling or the power level, not a fault. Our induction buzzing guide goes through the causes.
Buying a dutch oven for an induction cooktop
Measure the flat base, not the quoted diameter
Listings quote the widest measurement. What matters is the flat bottom that touches the glass. Aim to match it to your main element within about an inch, and prefer a pot with a wide, genuinely flat base over one with heavily sloped sides.
Very small pots can be too small to detect
Cooktops have a minimum pan diameter. A 2-quart pot with a narrow base can fail to register on a large element. If you want a small pot for an induction kitchen, check its base measurement against your cooktop's minimum before buying.
Enameled is the better induction choice, for the glass
Not because it heats better — it does not — but because a smoother base is kinder to a glass-ceramic surface than raw sand-cast iron. If you are choosing between a bare and an enameled pot for an induction kitchen specifically, that is a real tiebreaker. See bare vs enameled.
Start at medium, with fat in the pot
Induction's speed is exactly what Lodge's do-not-heat-empty warning is about. Build the habit and enamel lasts decades.
Skip the camp oven for indoor use
Legs and glass do not mix. If you want one pot for the kitchen and the fire pit, a flat-bottomed bare dutch oven with a domed lid is the compromise; a legged camp oven is not.
